제리 포웰 목사의 비전: ‘재학생 50,000명 등록’이 성취되다

Dr. Falwell’s enrollment vision fulfilled: 50,000 students

 

   리버티 대학교 설립자로 고인(故人)이 되신 제리 포웰 목사는 자신의 꿈에 대해 이렇게 말하곤 했습니다. “우리는 하나님의 도움으로 세계에서 가장 큰 기독교대학을 설립할 수 있다고 믿습니다.” 그의 비전의 하나가 바로 리버티 대학교에 5만 명의 학생이 등록하는 것이었습니다.

    The late Dr. Jerry Falwell, founder of Liberty University, once said, “We believe that God is going to help us build the greatest Christian school in the world.” Part of that vision was having 50,000 students taking classes through LU.

 

   마침내 제리 포웰 목사의 꿈이 실현되었습니다. 2010년 1월, 봄 학기 등록이 시작되면서 버지니아주 린치버그시에 위치한 캠퍼스 재학생과 온라인으로 등록한 학생들의 총 숫자가 5만 명을 훨씬 넘어섰습니다. 2월 초에는 12,000 명의 캠퍼스 학생들과 45,000명의 온라인 학생들을 합하여 모두 57,371명이 등록한 대학교가 되었습니다.

   Today the enrollment vision has been realized. When the spring semester got under way in January, more than 50,000 students were taking classes on LU’s campus in Lynchburg, Va., and through Liberty University Online. There are currently nearly 12,000 residential students and more than 45,000 online students – through early February a total of 57,371 students were enrolled.

 

   “아버지는 학교설립 초기엔 5천 명의 재학생이 등록한 학교를 세우는 것이 목표였습니다.”라고 현 리버티대학교 총장인 제리 레이먼 포웰 주니어(Jerry Lamon Falwell Jr.) 박사는 밝합니다. 그런데 “리버티 대학교의 공동 설립자이자 종교학부장인 엘머 타운즈 박사님은, 어느 날 아버지 제리 포웰 목사님이 리버티대학교가 언젠가 5만 명이 등록하는 학교로 변모할 것이라고 불쑥 공언하는 바람에 학교 재학생 등록 목표를 긴급히 수정하게 되었다고 여러 번 들려주셨습니다. 아버지 제리 포웰 목사님은 교육방식의 신기술 도입으로 더 많은 학생을 등록시킬 수 있다면서 그의 비전을 약간 더 높여 수정했습니다. 아버지 말씀처럼 과거 수년 사이에 우리는 온라인 교육방식이 더 인기가 높아진 것을 지켜보았습니다.”

    “Dad originally had a goal of 5,000 students,” said Chancellor and President Jerry Falwell, Jr. “Elmer Towns [Liberty co-founder and dean of the School of Religion] has often told the story about how that vision changed almost overnight when my father suddenly declared that Liberty would one day enroll 50,000 students. He revised the vision slightly due to technological advances in education delivery methods. Over the last few years, we have seen online delivery methods become even more popular.”

 

   레이먼 포웰 주니어 리버티대학교 총장은 지난 2007년, 선친이 돌아가실 무렵의 비전은 캠퍼스 재학생 25,000명과 온라인 재학생 25,000명이 등록하는 것이었다고 말합니다. 고인이 되신 제리 포웰 목사님과 현재도 왕성하게 활동하고 있는 엘머 타운즈 박사님이 1971년에 설립한 린치버그침례대학(Lynchburg Baptist College)은 154명의 입학생으로 개교했고, 토마스 로드 침례교회의 주일학교 교실에서 수업을 시작했습니다.

   Chancellor Falwell said that when his father died in May 2007, his dad’s vision for LU was to enroll 25,000 online students and 25,000 residential students. Founded in 1971 as Lynchburg Baptist College by Dr. Falwell and Towns, the school began with 154 students. Classes were held in the Thomas Road Baptist Church Sunday school classrooms.

   Students painted the "spirit rock" on campus after Chancellor Jerry Falwell, Jr. made the announcement in convocation. LU has seen steady growth over the years with its student population, but has seen a boom in recent years both on campus and online. LU Online had about 27,000 students enrolled in May 2008 — that number has grown by nearly 20,000 in less than two years.

 

   “만일 모든 등록학생들이 (채플 드리는 장소이자 농구경기장인) 바인 센터(Vines Center)에 모인다면 우리는 지금보다 7배 더 큰 규모의 강당이 필요할 것입니다. 아마도 다저스 스테이디엄(Dodgers Stadium, 프로야구 박찬호 선수가 활동했던 메이저리그 경기장으로 56,000석을 갖고 있다. 역자 주)을 빌려야 할지도 모른다”고 레이먼 포웰 주니어 총장은 들려줍니다.

   “If our entire student body tried to gather at the Vines Center, we would need a facility seven times that size. We’d have to rent out Dodgers Stadium,” said Chancellor Falwell.

 

   고 제리 포웰 목사님의 꿈이 실현되었으니, 레이먼 포웰 주니어 총장은 이제 더욱 미래에 집중해 나갈 것이라고 하면서 이렇게 소감을 밝힙니다. “리버티 대학교는 이제 세계에서 가장 큰 기독교 대학교가 되었습니다. 우리는 그 동안 이 학교를 통해 참으로 놀라운 축복을 경험해왔는데, 앞으로 우리의 미래가 어떨지 흥분이 됩니다.”

   Now that one of Dr. Falwell’s visions has been fulfilled, Falwell Jr. continues to focus on the future. “We’re now the world’s largest Christian university,” he said. “We’ve been blessed here with so much, and we’re excited about what the future holds.”
